This can’t be true- St Patrick wasn’t a Saint?!

Friday, March 16th, 2007

Just heard someone say it on Newstalk, so took a quick look online.
Apparently, St Patrick was never officially canonised (or beatified) by the Pope, meaning he’s not a “saint” in the modern sense of the term.
From WikiPedia:
For most of Christianity’s first thousand years, canonisations were done on the diocesan or regional level. Relatively soon [...]

A different “roads” story

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

Two bits of good infrastructural news for Donegal today.
Firstly, Minister Mary Coughlan has confirmed that the N2 link from Dublin to Derry and Donegal will be upgraded to a motorway as part of the next National Development Plan, with more details to be released in January. It looks like the road will start at the [...]

More on the Roads

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

A few items I’d like to note.
Firstly, the Letterkenny Joint Policing Committee for the third time yesterday. Among the topics discussed where local bye-laws, Anti-Social Behaviour and roads/traffic management. Superintendent Peadar Kearney had some alarming news; since local Gardai have undertaken their campaign of random breath testing, they have seen a marked change in the [...]

Irish Times, Virtual Ireland supplement

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

The Irish Times today printed a large supplement on “Virtual Ireland“, talking about computing, the Internet and other new technologies, and how they have affected the lives of Irish people.
Part of the supplement included pieces from a variety of Irish Bloggers. I was delighted to send them a piece for inclusion. Here’s the piece I [...]

Fianna Fail Ard Fheis, 2006

Monday, November 6th, 2006

Technical difficulties prevented me from getting online during this weekend’s Fianna Fail Ard Fheis, which is unfortunate as I had hoped to post some updates from City West as things were proceeding.
The event is being covered widely in the press, both on- and off-line, so there is no need for me to go over those [...]

Irish Road Carnage- What Can We Do?

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Another Monday morning, another weekend of carnage on the Irish roads.
At the same time, we have judges failing to disqualify drivers caught racing at 200kph on the Mullingar bypass while video-taping each other.
We despair about the state of Irish roads, road safety and driving. In particular, young male drivers come in for much criticism. [...]

“Scrap €52m e-voting system, says councillor”

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

My E-Voting post from earlier this week, “The Continuing E-Voting Saga“, has been picked up by The Sunday Times, who have a piece on Page 7 today entitled “Scrap €52m e-voting system, says councillor“.
Mark Tighe rang me on Thursday evening to ask a few follow-up questions, but his piece revolves mainly around the post [...]

The Continuing E-Voting Saga

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

I was on Highland Radio’s Shaun Doherty show earlier today, contributing to a discussion on E-Voting. You can listen to my contribution by clicking play on the box below:
share your files at box.net
The discussion was started by Fine Gael election candidate Terence Slowey, who was out to attack the Government over e-voting. He was joined [...]

Politics, Politicians and the Internet

Thursday, October 5th, 2006

I’m just come off the Shaun Doherty show on Highland Radio, where I was discussing this weekend’s “Blogging The Irish Election” conference which takes place in the Digital Hub in Dublin. You can listen to the interview at the bottom of this post.
The Internet is developing in Ireland all the time, with more and [...]
