Council Meeting, Jan 8 2007- Leisure Centre

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Last night’s council meeting saw us once again discussing the issue of the Leisure Centre on the High Road, and whether or not it can remain open once we open the new Leisure Complex at Sallaghagraine.
Cllr Jimmy Harte put forward the motion “That this council retain the Leisure Centre at the High Road”. This motion [...]

Search for Darren McGinley called off

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Highland Radio News is reporting that Gardai have called off the search for Glencolumcille student, Darren McGinely, who has been missing since late Thursday / early Friday of last week, following the discovery of a body in the Swilly near Ballyraine Halls student accommodation.
CCTV footage was found today showing Darren leaving the complex around 3:30am, [...]

A different “roads” story

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

Two bits of good infrastructural news for Donegal today.
Firstly, Minister Mary Coughlan has confirmed that the N2 link from Dublin to Derry and Donegal will be upgraded to a motorway as part of the next National Development Plan, with more details to be released in January. It looks like the road will start at the [...]

More on the Roads

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

A few items I’d like to note.
Firstly, the Letterkenny Joint Policing Committee for the third time yesterday. Among the topics discussed where local bye-laws, Anti-Social Behaviour and roads/traffic management. Superintendent Peadar Kearney had some alarming news; since local Gardai have undertaken their campaign of random breath testing, they have seen a marked change in the [...]

Irish Times, Virtual Ireland supplement

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

The Irish Times today printed a large supplement on “Virtual Ireland“, talking about computing, the Internet and other new technologies, and how they have affected the lives of Irish people.
Part of the supplement included pieces from a variety of Irish Bloggers. I was delighted to send them a piece for inclusion. Here’s the piece I [...]

Draft Register of Electors, 2007

Monday, November 6th, 2006

The next election is due in the next 6 to 10 months, most likely in June of next year, and if you aren’t registered to vote, you will not be able to take any part in the election process.
I’ve just received the draft register of electors for November 25th. For Donegal residents, this can be [...]

Fianna Fail Ard Fheis, 2006

Monday, November 6th, 2006

Technical difficulties prevented me from getting online during this weekend’s Fianna Fail Ard Fheis, which is unfortunate as I had hoped to post some updates from City West as things were proceeding.
The event is being covered widely in the press, both on- and off-line, so there is no need for me to go over those [...]

Leisure Centre Controversy: Update

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Last night, I attended a public meeting in the Orchard Inn which discussed the proposed sale of Letterkenny Leisure Centre to fund the development of the new Sports Complex at Sallaghagraine.
The meeting was well attended, with appox 30 - 50 people and a handful of politicians.
I have discussed this issue at length here before, and [...]

Irish Road Carnage- What Can We Do?

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Another Monday morning, another weekend of carnage on the Irish roads.
At the same time, we have judges failing to disqualify drivers caught racing at 200kph on the Mullingar bypass while video-taping each other.
We despair about the state of Irish roads, road safety and driving. In particular, young male drivers come in for much criticism. [...]

Update, October 18th 2006

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

A few quick updates:

Commiserations to St. Eunans, who lost this weekend’s County Senior Football Championship final to Gaoth Dobhair. Hopefully things will go better next year. Gaoth Dobhair were the best team in what was a disappointing game, and came through with a late flourish
Donegal is set to get more than 10% of the new [...]
