TV & Radio

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

I was a guest on George Hook’s drivetime show on Newstalk today, to discuss the subject of CCTV cameras following the recent press reports of a UK policeman’s claims that CCTV investment has been a waste of money. My input was to talk about the success of the investment we’ve seen in Letterkenny, and to […]

Nightclub Closing Times in Letterkenny

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I was on Highland Radio earlier today to discuss yesterday’s court sitting, where four nightclubs in the Letterkenny Garda area were refused extensions for the month of March, meaning they will have to stop serving at 1:30am.
The Gardai objected to the extensions, on the grounds of Public Order Offences, and used the example of the […]

Super-Duper Tuesday

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

A few quick updates!
I’ve been nominated on the long-list for Best Political Blog the 2008 Irish Blog Awards. I’m delighted to get a nomination, but I’ve no doubt that the award will be finding a home somewhere else. Political blogging in Ireland had a great year, including strong coverage of the General Election, and I’m […]

2008 Letterkenny Town Council Budget

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Last night (Dec 18), Letterkenny Town Council passed our annual budget for 2008. The budget will include a commercial rates increase of 3%, approximately 2 points less than the current rate of inflation and 1% less than the rate sought by the County Manager and Town Clerk in the Draft Budget.

I have some difficulties with […]

Meeting the Minister for Justice, Brian Lenihan

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform Brian Lenihan was in Letterkenny on Saturday, as part of the second Neil T Blaney Winter School. Following his speech, he held a meeting with the local Fianna Fail elected reps from Letterkenny and Milford.

I met with Brian Lenihan earlier last week, when I attended a meeting in […]

The Letterkenny Joint Policing Committee is meeting again today. There are a number of items on the agenda, chief among them a presentation from Aibhlinn McCrann.
Aibhlinn was heavily involved in preparing the Ballymun Community Safety Strategy, a document and community process which brought together various stakeholder groups in the Ballymun area (Gardai, Local Authority, Local […]

RTE is reporting that the Galway Water Situation has been resolved. The boil notice has been lifted, and water has been deemed safe to drink. As the article notes, 240 people officially suffered from Cryptosporidiosis, although the official figure is likely to be in the region of 5,000. The official figures were […]

Update, June 20th 2007

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

A few quick updates:

An Taoiseach has announced the Junior Ministers. Pat the Cope has been moved to Dept of Health, with responsibility for Health Promotion and is pledging to “lead by example”.
Niall Blaney has not been promoted. This has come as something of a surprise to us here in Donegal North East. Niall is clearly […]

Mosquito- Youth Work Ireland legal opinion

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Just off Highland Radio, where I was discussing the Moquito system with a representative of Youth Work Ireland and Sammy Wasson of Mac Security in Letterkenny.
I’m opposed to the system, as I’ve mentioned here before. I don’t believe the system is fair, and on my last post Damien Mulley raised the question of the legality […]
