Meeting the Minister for Justice, Brian Lenihan
December 3rd, 2007Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform Brian Lenihan was in Letterkenny on Saturday, as part of the second Neil T Blaney Winter School. Following his speech, he held a meeting with the local Fianna Fail elected reps from Letterkenny and Milford.
I met with Brian Lenihan earlier last week, when I attended a meeting in Dublin on Thursday of the Chairpersons of the Joint Policing Committees across the Country. Saturday was a much more productive meeting; for a start, there where over a hundred people there on Thursday as the meeting involved senior Gardai, officials from the Dept of Justice, politicians and local authority officials from all over the country.
The Minister is clearly very well aware of his brief. We discussed the recent deal to sell the Old High Road Leisure Centre for the development of a new court house, recent crime patterns in Donegal (including the border areas), our local Community Policing Initiatives, CCTV and a range of topics related to anti-social behaviour and public order offences.
This is an interesting and exciting time to be involved in Policing and Community Safety in Letterkenny. There are a number of initiatives currently underway, notably the Safer Letterkenny programme and the CCTV cameras, that will have a major impact on Community Safety in the Town. The Council and the Gardai are working very closely on all these programmes, and the Minister for Justice is very supportive.
