Update Nov 14th 2007
November 14th, 2007A few quick updates on a cold, wet November afternoon:
- Fianna Fail have begun consulting on a strategy for organising in the North of Ireland. Submissions are requested through the Fianna Fail website, to be received before March 21st, 2008. I will be making a submission, as I have raised this issue a number of times in the past, and have strong opinions on the topic.
- Alarming news today with the Taoiseach’s statement to the Dáil that a new dissident paramilitary group has emerged in the North. The group, which calls itself “Oglaigh na hÉireann”, is being blamed for the shooting of a PSNI office in Derry recently.
- Highland Radio is reporting that the Council and Courts Service have come to an agreement for the old Leisure Centre site on the High Road to be used for a new courts complex. While the details of this have yet to be formally presented to us as Councillors, I would consider this a positive development. I have always argued for the site to be kept in public ownership. This ties in well with the clear need for a new Court facility here in the town, and this site would prevent such a facility being located outside the Town Centre area.
- Here’s a great set of photos (101 of them) from a visit by John Scalzi to the Creation Museum in Kentucky, USA. Frightening stuff. More frightening is the recent decision by Lisburn City Council to ask all schools in their area to teach “creation, intelligent design and other theories of origin”.
- Here’s a brilliant fundraising event coming up soon: 10,001 Santas. On Sunday, December 9th, 10,001 Santas will assemble on the walls of Derry City, in an event organised by the Foyleside Shopping Centre to benefit four local charities. I hope to be there, and will be signing up soon.

We have a creationist perspective on the Grand Canyon in the library of Tipperary Institute available on interlibrary loan if you ever want to see how God created that natural wonder. It had nothing to do with erosion or tectonic plate movement.

I think that the 10001 Santas is a great idea. It’s for a good cause too but apart from that it should be fun. I’ll be down in Dublin so I’ll miss it, but I wish them luck with it.
