Update - Scam in local Newspapers
August 27th, 2007A quick update to last week’s post on the scam in last week’s Donegal News.
I’ve spoken to the editors of the paper, who were very quick to respond on Friday morning. They have printed a good piece in today’s paper warning people about it, and are investigating the source of the ad to see is there any potential for legal action against those who have placed the ad. I would doubt it; the ad was paid for with a credit card, which will probably turn out to be forged or stolen.
I discussed the issue on Shaun Doherty’s show on Highland Radio this morning - you can listen to the item below - and was joined by former Donegal GAA player Martin McHugh. Martin has previously raised a similar issue - where people offering accommodation are sent large cheques for more than the cost of the accommodation, and asked to return the balance. It’s basically the same scam, but with a different way of targetting people.
For more on this, read my original post or Damien Mulley’s post, where I first learned about the ad in the Irish Examiner.
