Letterkenny Update, 09/July 2007

July 9th, 2007

A few notes about Letterkenny today.

Firstly, the new Regional Sports Centre is now finally open. All the “ceremonial” stuff was done last week, and all aspects of the centre are now open for full access from today onwards. I’ve put a few photos of this on the net, you can see them here.

The new Regional Cultural Centre also opened today. It is to host a variety of events and exhibitions over the coming weeks, as part of the 2007 Earagail Arts Festival, and will then continue to play a huge part of the cultural life in the North West for years to come. The building has been designed by MacGabhann Architects (here’s photos on their website of the project). DonegalCulture.com is now dedicated to the new centre.

The weather here has been very poor over the weekend, so I haven’t had a chance to get some proper photos of this stunning building. Here’s a shot from my cameraphone, from when they were testing the LED lights on the building a few dates ago. Please ignore the ad for Watson Hire!

Finally, our monthly council meeting takes place tonight. I’ve put forward a motion calling on the council to investigate putting storm water attenuation systems around the town, to prevent flooding caused by heavy rains. Our climate has changed; we are now seeing much heavier rainfall than before. This is causing real problems for the storm drains in the town. There are solutions to this, including Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) used in large modern housing developments. I want the council to install these systems (or similar) in older areas of the town that are experiencing this flooding. I’ll post more details on this in the coming weeks, assuming the other councillors support my proposal this evening.
