May 14th, 2007A quick mid-campaign update on a few things.
The 2007 Mayor’s Ball took place on Friday past in the Clanree Hotel. Congratulations to Cllr Ciaran Brogan for an excellent evening; I’m sure a huge sum was raised for this year’s charity, Help Us Dry The Tears.
Campaigning continues for the 2007 General Election. I’m backing Dr James McDaid, and have been out canvassing around Letterkenny most evenings with other members of the campaign team. We’re getting a very good reaction, and the people seem to be strongly supporting Dr McDaid, but we can never be complacent. Donegal North East is in a unique position at this election (3 Fianna Fail TDs out of 3) so there will be a very tough campaign ahead of us over the next ten days.
On a somewhat-related point, elections took place recently across the UK. In Scotland, many areas had massive problems with Electronic Voting equipment (see this BBC news article). I’ve spoken out against the e-voting system here in Ireland before, on this website and in the national media. I’m delighted we’re not using the e-voting machines at this coming election, and don’t have faith that the system we have will ever be usable.
Construction of the new Leisure Centre in Letterkenny is coming on at a great pace. The Riverdance shows take place from the 23rd of May- the Centre will be well ready to host it.
Highland Radio are running a series of Election debates. They have uploaded some audio to their website, and are due to add more over the coming days.
