Letterkenny Town Bus- Routes & Timetables
April 16th, 2007I’m just out of the monthly meeting of Letterkenny Town Council.
Towards the end of the meeting Cllr Jean Crossan presented the rest of the councillors with details of the new Letterkenny Town Bus service. The service is due to start soon, and will see two separate routes running from 7am to 7pm covering most areas of the town. Pricing has not yet been set, but the service will be priced as economically as possible, and the Social Welfare bus pass will be accepted (although possibly not immediately).
Here are the routes:
Route 1
- Sister Sara’s/Station Roundabout
- LYIT
- Student Accommodation on Ballyraine Road (Ballyraine Halls/Aras Ailigh)
- Donegal Creameries
- Magherenan - Housing Estate 1 / 2
- Carolina Park
- Kiltoy - 2 stops
- Sylvan Park
- Lisneen
- Oakland Park
- Oatfields
- Post Office
- Market Square
- Tin Tai Chinse Restaurant
- Ballymacool - Housing Estate 1 / 2 / 3
- Old Dunnes Stores (Oldtown Bridge)
- Rear of Courtyard Shopping Centre
- Next/TK Maxx area
- Sister Sara’s / Station Roundabout
Route 2
- Sister Sara’s / Station Roundabout
- Ballyraine Road / Gortlee Junction
- Gortlee
- Whitethorn Park
- Knocknamona
- Gort na Greinne
- Foxhills
- Mountain Top
- Calhame Road
- Errigal View
- Thornberry
- Hospital
- Garda Station Crossroads (Newline Road / High Road)
- Post Office
- Market Square
- Tin Tai Chinese Restaurant
- St Eunan’s College
- Dr McGinley Villas
- Fernhill
- Solomon’s Court
- Solomon’s Manor
- Glendale Drive / Cluain Ard Junction
- College Park
- Glenoughty Close
- Long Lane
- Hospital
- Sister Sara’s / Station Roundabout
This are the latest confirmed routes. Each route starts and finishes at Sister Sara’s / Station Roundabout, every hour between 7am and 7pm. Routes are fairly finalised, but may be subject to change (we’d like to see the Council offices include, and a small number of other changes) but for the most part these routes are great, and will make the bus route available to a huge number of people.
I hope to get my hands on a proper map of these routes soon. I’m delighted to see that the bus will be up and running so soon.
Congratulations are due to all those involved- and this has taken a lot of people. As councillors, we’ve all been calling for it, but it’s Cllr Jean Crossan who has been working on it longer than anyone else, and she has been the most consistently vocal councillor on the issue. The Town Clerk, Assistant Town Clerk, Town Foreman and Town EngineerĀ have all played a part, as have Dr James McDaid and Pat The Cope Gallagher, through their roles as Ministers of State at the Department of Transport.
I hope this bus will be of real benefit to the people of the town, and that it will get the support it deserves. Only time will tell!

its good to see a town bus service finally being setup. However, i would be just a little sceptical on the efficient timekeeping of both routes, especially through the port road, which is, (as you and many know) a very busy road at almost all times of the day..
even some CIE busess, which traditionally drove to oliver plunkett road, avoid doing so today for this reason.
if the bus service is unreliable at keeping on time, then alot of people will avoid using it…that could be a cause for criticism.
and this service comes at a time when elections are near ;-) i am cynical of its timing, to say the least.

Damien I had a look at these routes and took some time looking over them and I can find multiple problems with them and I do not think this service can be a success based on the timetable I am seeing that is on the printed leaflets. First and foremost, Dohertys are trying to get too many places into one route! There is other problems also but I will not go into them now as my opinion isnt likely to change anything anyways.

I think the Letterkenny Town Bus service is a great idea and a first step for a more complete and mature transport service that may be needed in the future as the town will keep growing. I have seen the bus passing by many times but never the chance to actually get into and use the service. There is no timetables to be found (online or printed), there is a route table but no one knows exactly where the stops are (for example: Sylvan Park entrance? Gortlee? what part of Gortlee? etc), are you supposed to stop call the driver or will it stop on assigned stops? no info available. Please let do our best to keep this idea going, make available the complete timetables and all the information needed to use and enjoy the service. Many Thanks.

I am finding extremely difficult to get any information on the routes and timetables of this service. Every time I see the bus is empty, and no wonder, you really need to make a point of using public transport to use this bus!!!!

Is it possible to start the service from lowermainstreet-mainstreet-highroad(govt. services)-pramerica-mountaintop? Also, is it possible to reduce the fare from minimum 3 euro(too high) to 1 euro minimum for one way? However, the best would be keep minimum as 50 cents(for first 2 stops) and then increas by 50 cents as the distance increases(for every 2 stops). I would like to use the bus service in the morning and sometimes evening from monday to friday, but due to current route and unability to find the stops(post marked as bus stop).

Its now july 2008…from reading the above posts the problem of not knowing exactly where the bus drop offs+pick ups has been an existing problem.
It is possible to go to Dublin + find the bus stop you are looking for in a short time(+there is a hell of alot of routes) yet in a town like letterkenny with this 1 service people cant seem to get on the bus…only wave at it as it passes with no passengers!!!!!
would notice boards at the shopping centres or more info on this (its)website not be an idea????
Surely the bus service will be much more of a success if people know more about it…in particular where to get on it.
