A Big weekend for GAA

April 21st, 2007

A quick note to send best wishes to the Donegal GAA team, ahead of tomorrow’s National Football League Final in Croke Park, and the St Eunan’s College team, who have an All Ireland final in Breifne Park in Co Cavan later today.

Donegal have had a great season, and this is their best chance in years to bring some silverware back to the North West since 1992. A result tomorrow would mark a great start to the fight for Sam Maguire in 2007. I may be getting ahead of myself, but I’ve already sent my commiserations to Dara Calleary- a FF Candidate in Mayo (and also a blogger).

St Eunan’s College have had a great few years in GAA. When I was doing my Leaving Cert, the College won the McLarnon Cup for the first time in over 20 years. The atmosphere at the Game was fantastic, and it gave a real boost to the school. I hope a victory today can deliver the same for the school, at the end of their centenary (academic) year.

As a side note, the St Eunan’s team that won the McLarnon Cup in 2000 featured two players - Neil Gallagher and Colm McFadden - that will start for Donegal today. Rory Kavanagh was also part of the McLarnon team in 2000, and is an important member of the current Donegal team, but injury means he won’t be playing tomorrow.
