CSPE at St Eunan’s College, 2007
March 13th, 2007It was around this time last year that I visited St Eunan’s College to talk to a class of CSPE students about the roles and responsibilities of a Town Councillor. I was delighted to be asked back again last week.
This year’s class where similar to last year’s, in that they knew what they wanted to learn. They had a number of questions prepared, and from those questions a vigorous debate grew. Interestingly, the issues raised were mostly different from last years, focusing on the upcoming General Election, the return of the Blaney organisation to Fianna Fail, and of course the new Leisure Centre. I guess a year is a long time in politics!
It’s refreshing to see such a high level of interest in politics in a young class. We’re constantly being told that young people are being turned off politics. That hasn’t been my experience, both as a candidate, as a public rep and indeed as a young person among my own peers. Visiting classes like this makes me very sure that there will be many great young candidates coming forward for elections in Letterkenny in the future.
Thanks to Ms Doherty, and her class, for an enjoyable hour. I hope I can be of help again in the future.
