Update, Jan 29th 2007

January 29th, 2007

I’ve had the week-to-end-all-weeks over the past 8 days. Web server crashed last Sunday, taking a few dozens sites and few hundred email accounts with it *. I’ve been working on it literally around the clock since, and things are finally looking up. So that’s why things have been quiet around here! (This site is hosted on a different server)

On the political front, things are starting to move into election mode locally. The National Development Plan has been released. It places a very heavy emphasis on the development of Letterkenny, as part of a cross-border corridor with Derry. The new NDP is extremely important for the growth of Letterkenny, with money allocated for Healthcare, Education, Transport and Infrastructure improvements in and around the town. I haven’t read it cover-to-cover yet. but what I have read is extremely positive for us in Letterkenny.

On Friday night, we had the AGM of our constituency brach of Ogra Fianna Fail. This was the first meeting of the new, combined FF/IFF Ogra. An officer board was elected which consisted of four members of the former IFF, and four “original” FF members. Everything went off without a hitch, and should continue to do so on an Ogra level into the future.

Last night saw the first public meeting of Dr James McDaid’s Re-election Campaign. We had a great turnout (about 400) in the Mount Errigal to discuss the strategy for the coming few months. We don’t know when the election is going to be, but we know there’s going to be a big battle on the cards. I would be confident that FF will take at least two seats, but only if we put together a strong campaign.

* It didn’t actually crash, it fell victim to a security breach and was taken off the network by the technicians at the Server Hosting Centre in the London Docklands. They backed everything up, then formatted and rebuilt the machine. And then lost the backups. So it’s the same result as if it had crashed, except we lost a few days whle waiting for them to find the backups. Ugh.

  1. listener Says:

Damien, i listen to newstalk 106-108 fm usually everyday, and many political commentators have said that the proposed spending of 184 Billion in taxpayers money is irresponsible for the future of irelands population and completely flawed.

Even the ESRI, the governments own thinktank has been critical..that tells you something.

The ESRI says that taxes will have to be raised by as much as €7bn to pay for the €70bn plan if key infrastructural schemes are to be delivered over the next seven years.

“We could deliver the infrastructure, but would have to raise taxes. They cannot be delivered with the current economic conditions,” Professor John FitzGerald said.

so, would you be in favour of raising taxes?
and if so, who for? less well off working class people? or well off business people? who are obviously going to benefit more from this plan.

i can see MORE cuts in health, MORE cuts in education, MORE cuts in services that the majority of working class irish people depend on.
i see MORE increases in tax,MORE poverty..and of course the rich getting richer.

ireland is an expensive country to invest in,outside investors are not looking at ireland anymore to setup..the only attractive thing being corporation tax, but other countries are now under-cutting this.

people in some eastern european countries, contrary to some local beliefs, are generally better educated, work for less, and work harder. (i am irish by the way, just incase you think i’m biased)

already we see major contributors to irelands economy looking to asia and eastern europe for operations..such as DELL,Motorola,Intel..
Yet people still keep spending money they don’t have, believing that the good times are set to continue.

in dublin, homeowners are facing negative equity, yet house prices continue to rise in other parts of country which begs the question..how long before it spreads out of dublin?

the country is pretty messed up if you ask me.
our whole economy is basically run by the construction industry, and that includes our current Fianna Fail government in bed with them.

I don’t want to be pesimistic, but this NDP probably won’t do very much for letterkenny in long term.

i’m not against progress, but we cannot rely on construction to keep the economy going and NDP which is basically spending 184 Billion of taxpayers money won’t stop it going bust eventually.
Look around letterkenny, the amount of empty units is growing, how many more do we need?
how many more houses do we need that people can’t afford to buy?

we’ll all pay for it in the end..but i guess current politicians wont care by then.

    i won’t be around either, i’m moving!
