Letterkenny IT Set to Expand Again
January 10th, 2007It’s been announced today that Letterkenny IT has been given the go-ahead to acquire land for the development of future buildings. The announcement was on Highland Radio news, but their news section hasn’t been updated yet.
This is another massive investment in LYIT, the engine of the economy for County Donegal. Credit is due to IT Director, Paul Hannigan, and his staff at the Institute who have driven the recent developments there. LYIT is one of the best run institutions of it’s size in the Country, and is well able to continue to grow in numbers, in facility levels and in reputation.
This new funding will allow for the construction of new buildings, including an extension to the Business Development Centre and new research facilties. It will also see vital extra car-parking spaces provided on campus, which will help alleviate the problems of parking on both the Port Road and the Ballyraine Road (I say help, as I believe other things are needed to- such as improved car-pooling and public transport access).
I’m currently undertaken a Research Degree at LYIT, and I see first hand how much work is being done there. LYIT has contributed massively to Letterkenny and Donegal over the last thirty years; this new investment will see the College continue to grow, with a huge spinoff for the County sure to follow.
Update:Here’s the Highland Radio news article on this announcement.
