Joint Policing Committee
July 18th, 2006Letterkenny has recently been chosen as one of 22 areas in the country to take part in the pilot programme for the establishment of Joint Policing Committees, which will see local representatives come together with members of the community and Gardai to discuss matters related to local policing.
As part of this process, the council are seeking nominations for members of the public and community organisations to be part of the committee. There are positions for three community representatives on the committee, and they can come from any section of the community and can be nominated by any person or group (including self-nomination).
Nominations should be submitted to Paddy Doherty, Town Clerk, Letterkenny Town Council, Neil T Blaney Road, Letterkenny, by Friday July 21st (this Friday).
Nominations will then be considered by the Council, who will make the appointments. We hope to have the first meeting of this committee before the end of July, to help speed up our CCTV plans. (Establishing the Committee has become part of the requirements for operating a community based CCTV system, which we have already been allocated funding for).
There has been some talk in the press that this committee will only meet twice a year. This isn’t exactly true; under the guidelines, the committees must meet at least twice a year, but it is the intention of everyone involve that this Committee in Letterkenny will meet much more frequently.

You accused the Community Residents Group of being disengenuous in relation to the JPC according to today’s ‘Donegal News’.
Having read the 3rd paragraph of this post which you have emphasised in bold, I think you should withdraw that comment.

Francis,
Allow me to clarify my point on that, which got a bit lost in the piece.
Despite your group’s constant protests that you are not opposed to any of the people who were appointed, I feel that we would not be in this position (with your threat of legal action) had your representative been appointed, even with the disputed appointee.
As I say below the paragraph in bold, the council makes the appointments. As in all these situations, the councillors themselves are able to make nominations, not just external groups/individuals/bodies.
