Donegal Action For Cancer Care Demo- A Huge Success
May 15th, 2006Yesterday’s Donegal Action for Cancer Care rally/demo in Letterkenny was a huge success. There is a slight dispute over numbers, with national media saying there were 6,000 participants (RTE and Irish Examiner) and the DACC group and local media (Highland Radio) saying there were 15,000. Either way, a huge amount of people took to the streets in the pouring rain to send a very definite message.
The terrible weather was unable to dampen the spirits; Letterkenny (and Donegal) came to a standstill to support the cause of retaining our current Cancer Care services in Letterkenny General Hospital, and extending the services so that the people of Donegal can get equal access to service at the same standards as patients across the Island, without having to travel for hours on end.
The rally was supported by people from every corner of Donegal, and from every walk of life (and every political persuasion- every party, MEP, TD, Senator and councillor supports the campaign). The DACC group has been extremely succesful at energising and uniting the people of the county behing their campaign since their foundation last year. This rally was surely the high point.
As a number of the speakers said, DACC want to be put out of business. If the proper services are provided, the group will have no further need to exist. The ball is in the Government’s court now.
