Dr James McDaid announces retirement
April 25th, 2006Local media today is buzzing with the report that Dr James Mc Daid has announced his retirement from politics at the next election. It’s on the front of today’s Donegal People’s Press (their website is here but hasn’t been updated yet), this Highland Radio article, a piece on BreakingNews.ie and I’m sure more places to follow. It’s bound be a big topic of discussion on the Shaun Doherty Show on Highland (live online between 10am and 1pm on HighlandRadio.com)
It’s been clear for some time that Dr McDaid was considering leaving politics, particularly after recent events. From speaking to him, Jim has been very unsure about whether to stand or not, and has been seeking input from across the local organisation. He was in touch with me yesterday to tell me he had informed the Taoiseach he would not be seeking election again, and that it would be in the media today.
I’d like to wish Jim all the best for the future. James, and his partner Siobhain, have just welcomed a new baby into their lives, which I’m sure is taking up plenty of their time. Jim has been a committed servant for Donegal North East in his 18 years in politics, and has left his mark throughout the constituency. Every area benefitted, particularly during his time as Minister for Sport. Jim has been a great help to me in my time in politics, and I remain very thankful for all he has done for me.
The biggest question today is- who will follow? It will fall to the local organisation of Fianna Fail to decide on that at our Selection Convention (the date for which is still to be set). The local organisation has a pre-arranged meeting this Sunday, and I’m sure this will be a major topic for discussion. Much local speculation has focussed on the return of the Blaney IFF organisation to the party, but (as a local member) I know no more than what has been in the press. Cllr Ciaran Brogan is being tipped as the next candidate in Letterkenny (more info in the article in the People’s Press, when it’s online). Again, that remains a matter for the party members here in Donegal North East. I won’t be seeking a nomination.
Best wishes from all the extended Blakes go to Jim today. Our family has a long association with Jim, on personal, medical, political levels, and I hope the next stage of his life goes very well for him.
Update: I’ve been away from the radio most of the morning, but I understand the Shaun Doherty show has all been about Jim. He’s currently on air as I write this, outlining the reasons for his decision. The Taoiseach’s statement is now on the Fianna Fail site

This must make the donegal ne a completely differnt race now, no doubt ff will still take two but what do reckon for the third. Not being that up to date on donegal politics can someone give us a steer on what might happen. I’ll nail my colours to the mast I vote for Sinn Fein and in the absense of any knowledge i hope it helps Padraig.
