Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann- 1 week to go
August 16th, 2005We’re now less than one week away from the start of the Scoil Eigse, Seachtain na Gaeilge and the Fleadh Cheoil. The sense of anticipation is really palpable in Letterkenny; the entire town is talking Fleadh Fleadh Fleadh.
The last meeting of the Fleadh committee takes place tonight. Preparations have gone very well, and everything is now in place to welcome the crowds to Letterkenny. We’ve even got the entire Port Road re-surfaced!
Gardai today announced details of the car parking and traffic management. The main part is the “Park & Ride” arrangements for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Fleadh, which will see major Car Parks on all four major arteries into the town, and a number of buses running between the town, the venues and the car parks. As has been previously announced, the Main Street will be closed from the Station Roundabout (at Sister Sara’s / Tesco) to the Library (Oliver Plunkett Road), and the High Road from the junction with New Line Road to the Traffic Lights will also be closed. Pearse Road will remain open, but Gardai will be encouraging people to leave their cars either at home or in one of the Car Parks and make their way around town on foot.
All the arrangements are in place at this stage. After many years of hard work, Letterkenny is well prepared to host the All Ireland Fleadh. We look forward to welcoming people from across the world to see what the town have on offer.
